Stormwater harvesting in ephemeral streams: how to bypass clogging and unsaturated layers

چکیده

Abstract To cope with water scarcity in drylands, stormwater is often collected surface basins and subsequently stored shallow aquifers via infiltration. These harvesting systems are accompanied by high evaporation rates hygiene problems. This commonly a consequence of low infiltration rates, which caused clogging layers that form on top the soil profile presence thick vadose zone. The present study aims to develop conceptual solution increase groundwater recharge systems. efficiency vadose-zone wells trenches tested using analytical equations, numerical models, sensitivity analyses. Dams built channel ephemeral streams (wadis) selected as case construct simulations. modelling demonstrated contribute effective bypassing layer. By implementing these solutions, begins 2250–8100% faster than from bed wadi reservoir. analysis showed especially responsive well length trench depth. In terms quantity, had best performance; it can infiltrate up 1642% more reservoir, between 336 825% trench. Moreover, yield highest cumulative per dollar when there limitations available area. methods investigated here significantly increased providing practical solutions enhance aquifer storage drylands.

Discontinuous ephemeral streams

Many ephemeral streams in western North America flowed over smooth valley floors before transformation from shallow discontinuous channels into deep arroyos. These inherently unstable streams of semiarid regions are sensitive to short-term climatic changes, and t’o human impacts, because hillslopes supply abundant sediment to infrequent large streamflow events. Discontinuous ephemeral streams a...

Spatiotemporal evolution of clogging of stormwater infiltration systems

Clogging of stormwater infiltration systems is an issue of major importance. Actually, it does not only lead to flow rate reduction and increased ponding but it also reduces treatment capacity when infiltration systems are equipped with bypass devices. The aim of this paper is to present the results obtained in this context. The first objective is to understand and characterize clogging evoluti...

A Review on Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse

Australia is a country of some 7,700 million square kilometers with a population of about 22.6 million. At present water security is a major challenge for Australia. In some areas the use of water resources is approaching and in some parts it is exceeding the limits of sustainability. A focal point of proposed national water conservation programs is the recycling of both urban stormwater and tr...

Problems of Cold Agglutinins in Cardiac Surgery: How to Manage Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Myocardial Protection

Cold agglutinins are of unique relevance in cardiac surgerybecause of the use of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cold autoimmune diseases are defined by the presence of abnormal circulating proteins (usually IgM or IgA antibodies) that agglutinate in response to a decrease in body temperature. These disorders include cryoglobulinemia and cold hemagglutinin disease.Immunoglobulin M aut...
